Morning Chris Taylor, You have an igniter/burner coil inside your system that has to be functioning properly to have good combustion going inside the coils of your heater unit (very bottom). I tried to pull the documents to see if yours was kerosene powered (like mine: not a Karcher). But could NOT pull your HDS 601C up on the company site (Karcher.com, sorry. It's me & my new PC).

Try to fill the machine from somewhere else. You can do this from the outlet. If you manage to do this, put on the machine. ( now you know that when there is hot water in the machine, the tap goes round free for safety). Now as the water starts to cool down.start trying to see if you can unscrew it. My plan is that with the hot water, the safety will start to work again.
